International Workshop: Desertification, Migration and Local Development

SolArid In collaboration with CENSAD (the Community of Sahel-Saharan States)

Location: Tripoli, Libya
Date:
26 - 28 November 2008

Background

SolArid, the Global Mechanism’s South-to-south Cooperation Programme supports peri-Saharan countries at sub-regional and strategic levels, with the aim of mobilising resources for sustainable land management (SLM) and the implementation of the UNCCD.

Land Degradation, Poverty and Migration: What are the linkages? Where are the answers?

An international workshop, Desertification, Migration and Local Development, is to be organised in collaboration with CENSAD and hopes to conduct:

• the evaluation of land degradation’s contribution to migration within the Sahelo-Saharan area

• a deeper understanding of migratory flows, their socio-economic and cultural dimensions within the region, and their impact on countries’ development, including migrants’ contributions to local development in their countries of origin

• the development of strong arguments to use with national decision-makers and Northern partners, on the importance of investing in sustainable land management in arid zones, in response to migration caused by poverty.
