| Together
to Market is a series of 10 short radio features lasting between 5 and 10 minutes,
first broadcast on Radio Lira between December 2003 and March 2004 and
subsequently by other Ugandan FM stations in 2004, which aim to stimulate interest
among small farmers in forming groups to market their produce more effectively.
They
are intended for broadcast on local radio stations as part of longer, live programmes
focused on discussion around the topic of the spots. They have been broadcast
in this way, both in their original English format and in translation into local
languages, on a number of local radio stations in Uganda. The
series was made as a collaboration between the Natural
Resources Institute, the BBC, Radio Lira,
Foodnet, the Ugandan NGO CEDO and the
Ugandan Government's NAADS and PMA Secretariat,
as part of a project funded by DFID's Crop Post-Harvest
Research Programme, aimed at increasing involvement with the market on the
part of small farmers in Uganda. To
listen to the audio files, which are in MP3 format, requires an audio system such
as RealPlayer. You can download this for free at RealPlayer

The radio
packages or 'spots' have at their core excerpts from interviews carried out in
Rakai, Masaka and Masindi Districts in Uganda in October 2003 by a team consisting
of a BBC producer, the series presenter and the NRI team leader. Formal training
in the making of pre-recorded features for 12 local radio presenters and producers
preceded the making of the series and on-the-job training in the making of pre-recorded
features was included for the Radio Lira presenter. The
series is also suitable for use in conjunction with training in group formation
for farmers, or in a broader educational context, either formal or informal. It
has been used in training extension workers as part of the project in Uganda.
CDs
were produced of the programmes. A limited number are
still available. Contact Dr. Monica Janowski (m.janowski@sussex.ac.uk).
