| The
series Eating Out Safely was first broadcast in Zambia between October and December
2005 on the Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation
(ZNBC)'s Radio 2. It consists of a series of 12 short features lasting between
5 and 10 minutes in which the Zambian singer Angela Nyirenda visits food
stalls in Lusaka markets. These were broadcast together with a series of linked
and specially commissioned dramas on the same topics in a live one-hour magazine
context, presented by ZNBC's Rosina Mbewe.
The intention of the series is to stimulate interest and concern about the importance
of safe practices in the preparation of informally vended foods. The series was
made as a collaboration between the NRI, the
BBC and ZNBC.
On-the-job training for the ZNBC presenter in the making of pre-recorded features
was included as part of the making of the series.
Eating
out Safely was made as part of a project on the safety of
informally vended foods involving an international coalition
spanning four countries funded by DFID's Crop
Post-Harvest Research Programme and including the National
Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research in Zambia,
the City Health Department in Zimbabwe and the University
of Jadavpur in India.
Although
the series was made in Zambia for initial broadcast there, it is hoped that it
will be found suitable for transmission and for use in training purposes in other
countries in the context of the promotion of safe food preparation practices. To
listen to the audio files, which are in MP3 format, requires an audio system such
as RealPlayer. You can download this for free at RealPlayer The
