The
movement of people will be one of the most important domestic, developmental
and foreign policy issues for governments over the next decade. International
migration, asylum and immigration will form part of a wider debate
around globalisation and its effects on poor people and lower income
countries.
The Migration team in DFID-London has produced a policy paper on
migration and development, Moving out of Poverty – Making
Migration Work Better for Poor People. The paper explains how DFID
will deal with the effects of migration in its poverty reduction
programmes, working with partners at a national and international
level.
The
UN
High Level Dialogue on International Migration and Development
which took place in New York (14-15 September 2006) was the first
such meeting of its kind and demonstrates the growing importance
of the connection between migration and development. At this meeting,
States agreed that it would be useful to continue discussions and
a proposal for a Global Forum on Migration and Development was supported.
The first forum will be hosted by the Belgian government and will
take place in Brussels from
the 10-11 July.
