Economy
Three-quarters
of
all hungry people live in rural areas, and are overwhelmingly
dependent on agriculture for their food, with few alternative
sources of income or employment. This makes them particularly
vulnerable to crises such as drought and famine. It is not
enough to address hunger through measures aimed directly at
feeding hungry people. The root causes of vulnerability must
also be tackled. Agricultural and rural development are vital
in achieving long term sustainable food security for the world's
poorest people. Increasing agricultural production and productivity
are central to increasing food supply and, along with developing
the non-agricultural rural economy, creating opportunities
in rural areas. Important benefits include cheaper food and
higher rural incomes.
