Led Total Sanitation in Sierra Leone
The
civil war in Sierra Leone devastated the country’s basic
infrastructure and weakened the Districts’ capacity
to support communities in maintaining WatSan services. As
a result, many rural and urban communities lack access to
sanitation facilities and remain dependent on agencies and
donors. As the Government of Sierra Leone, DFID and UNICEF
work together on a five year programme to improve hygiene,
sanitation and water supply in the country, Community Led
Total Sanitation (CLTS) has been identified as the most promising
option for increasing sanitation coverage for one simple reason:
it works.
In January and February 2008, Kamal Kar facilitated a series
of hands-on training workshops for UNICEF Sierra Leone, the
Ministry of Health and Sanitation, Plan UK and Plan Sierra
Leone. Workshop participants triggered CLTS in 34 villages.
